Teaching Your Dog "Give Me Paw/Shake Hands"
A dog who can shake hands is usually tought of as a well-mannered dog. "Shake" is a very traditional trick and almost every trained dog knows it. The first step into teaching your dog to give you its paw is to pick a command for it like "Shake Hands, or Give me paw". Whatever command you choose, stick with it and always use the same word.
1. First make your dog sit. After your dog sits, grab your dogs paw and "shake" it then let go. Click the clicker, and give it the treat. Keep doing this a few more times.
2. The second step is to actually not grab your dogs paw, but make your dog give it to you instead. Tap on your dog's foot. Most dogs, after doing the first step a couple of times, will give you their paw the second you place your hand near their foot. Once your dog gives you its paw, click the clicker and reward her.
3. Once you think your dog understands, start including the command "Shake Hands or Give me paw." Keep rewarding your dog and even try to switch hands.
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog "give me paw".
- Teach them in a place with carpet so they can easily balance and be comfortable when sitting.
- Make sure you only use one command during training so you wont confuse your dog. Once your dog has mastered this command you can try adding the other command to it.
- If your dog doesn't lift its paw by itself go back to step one.
- Don't allow your dog to get bored. If your dog looses interest stop the training there.
