1. First you have to teach your dog to "beg" if he/she does not know yet.
2. All you have to do is feed the dog while you are eating and giving him/her the command "beg", if possible don't feed it human food, but treat it some of it's own dog food. Don't look at your dog as you do this.
3. Next, You have to tell them not to beg. Only do this when you are looking at your dog. Reward them the minute they look away.
4. Finally, add a command every time you look at your dog while eating like,"Your not begging are you?" And your dog should look away.
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog to "Your not begging are you?"
- Don't overload the dog especially on the first day. Practice this exercise for 10-15 minutes only. It should be difficult for your dog but don't give in.
- If your dog just isn't getting it, use a situation of when your dog is likely to beg and use that situation to teach it.
- If you get bothered by your dog begging for food all the time, this isn't the best trick to teach it. It may get used to you treating it for begging.
- Even after the dog has mastered this technique it should be practiced regularly.
- Eventually you can try to phase out the food reward in exchange for praise.
