Teaching Your Dog "Down"
From your dog's view point, the roll over command is one of the difficult to accept. This position is submissive, a bolder pup will want to get up and might back off, not wanting to submit. The dog will feel as though she's about to be punished. Once your dog understands this is not the case and he actually gets rewarded, he will have no problem doing it again..
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog to do the down command.
- Remember that this is a very submissive act on the dog's behalf, so there is no need to rush matters.
- IT may be hard for your dog to repeat after a successful try since he may be too exited to get into such a submissive position.
- First instruct your dog to "lay down."
- Next hold a treat just above and slightly in front of your dog. Lead it above his head, and then off to the side of his shoulder, and slowly towards his back. The treat should lead him into the roll over motion. Stop half way just before the dog gets on his back and reward him for getting close to the position.
- Repeat the previous steps, slowly getting your dog closer to laying on his back. Once he has, lead the treat to the other side, leading him to roll over. You can give a little push before any apprehension happens.
- Once your dog rolls over automatically say "roll over" and reward him.
