Teaching Your Dog "Sit Pretty/Beg"
Sit pretty is a way to get ur dog to sit but with their front paws in the air. It's quite cute and it makes even the ugliest mutt look super cute. But unluckily for some dog breeds it may be too uncomfortable for them to "Sit" norless "Sit pretty/Beg" so make sure your dog is comfortable sitting before doing this trick. If your dog knows "Sit" on command, it will make the trick easier to teach.
1. First get your dog into the sitting position by telling it to sit. Then from the sitting position, keeping a treat in your hand, raise your hand up over the dogs head. Since your dog is already in the sitting position the only way it could go is up. So most dogs will automatically sit pretty -- raising their front paws off the ground and sit on their rear-end. When your dog does that say "beg" or "sit pretty" click and reward it.
2. If your dog is not "sitting pretty," try doing the exercise against a wall or in the corner so your dog wont come out of the sitting position. Keep a treat in your hand and raise it above your dogs head as you give the command. If your dog comes out of the sitting position, hold its hindquarters down with your other hand. When your dog does that say "beg" or "sit pretty" click and reward it.
3. Keep practicing, and remember that for some breeds it's easier than others. When your dog does it correctly always make a big deal out of it and praise it.
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog "sit pretty".
- Teach them in a place with carpet so they can easily balance and be comfortable when sitting.
- Make sure you only use one of these commands, "sit pretty" or "beg," during training so you wont confuse your dog. Once your dog has mastered this command you can try adding the other command to it.
- Some breeds can't really sit without being uncomfortable so teaching this trick may be difficult.
- Dogs have a tendency to try and stand up. You lower your hand so your dog doesn't reach that point.
- Don't allow your dog to get bored. If your dog looses interest stop the training there.
