Teaching Your Dog "High Five"
You shouldn't be the only one to give encouragement. Teach your dog "High Five" so it can give one to anyone that just made a home run or touch down! "High Five" is a different version of "Give me paw" except that the dogs paw is at a igher position. The first step into teaching your dog to give a high fiev is to teach it "Shake Hands, or Give me paw" first.
1. First make your dog sit. After your dog sits, give your dog the "Give me paw" command but keep your hand up higher (As high as its head). Keep doing that a few more times.
2. The second step is to say "High Five" instead, with your hand still in the same position. Keep doing that until your dog does a "high five" 95% of the time. It's a quick trick to teach, so really smart dogs might bore with it quickly. Make it challenging by switching paws.
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog "high five".
- Teach them in a place with carpet so they can easily balance and be comfortable when sitting.
- Make sure you only use one command during training so you wont confuse your dog. Once your dog has mastered this command you can try adding the other command to it.
- Really smart dogs might bore with it quickly. Make it challenging by switching paws back and forth, and add commands like "left" and "right".
- Don't allow your dog to get bored. If your dog looses interest stop the training there.
