Training Your Dog "Wave"
After teaching your dog "Shake Hands" teaching it to "Wave" should be simple. It's a cute trick, and it's fairly easy to teach if your dog has learned "Shake Hands" and "High Five".
1. This trick will be easy to teach if your dog already knows how to "high five" or "shake hands" on command. First get your dog into the sit position. Start doing the high five command a few times to get your dog used to the paw shake motion when you hold out your hand.
2. After your dog is used to "high fiveing," stop saying the command but keep your hand in the same position so your dog knows you want it to do the behaviour again. Once you see its paw in the air, heading towards your hand, move your hand out of the way. When your your dog notices you took your hand away it will draw its paw back, praise it and reward it. It might be thinking it did something wrong at first but the rewarding will let it know it did it right.
3. Soon your dog will catch on, and it might even do 3 waves in a row. Keep practicing a few more times until your dog masters waving.
Here are some extra tips for teaching your dog to wave.
- It's easier if your dog already knows "Shake Hands" or "High Five"
- Even after the dog has mastered this technique it should be practiced regularly.
- Eventually you can try to phase out the food reward in exchange for lavish praise.
